The Archaeology of Ancient Magic - Logo Fav

I am an archaeologist with a research focus in ancient magic & ritual practice. My work comprises the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman record, both, archaeological and textual sources. I founded the Ancient Magic Academy on September 1st 2024 with the goal to make academic research on the topic easily and quickly accessible to a broad audience. Most of the content is based on my own original research. In addition, I share free online resources for further studies.

For those who want to dive deeper into the matter I offer various workshops about ancient magic as well as a monthly live online lecture on patreon for my “Thoth & Maat” patrons.

About my academic studies

I received my M.A. in the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Pre- and Early History, Egyptology (minor) and Classical Archaeology (minor) at the University of Mainz and my PhD at the University of Erfurt. In my PhD I analysed the making and use of 268 ancient magical artefacts based on instructions preserved in the Egyptian and Greek ritual manuals. These ancient texts are dated between the 2nd century BCE and the 7th century CE and they were written in Greek, Demotic, and Coptic.

I worked as a postdoc for six years at the department of Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg and at the department of Ancient History at the University of Erfurt. From 2017-2019 I received a three year grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for my research about ancient magical signs, the project was located at Erfurt and Heidelberg (Germany).

I spent the following two years researching ancient technologies and their potential applications in contexts of the sustainable development goals before I returned to studying ancient magic and started sharing my research online.
